The Scribbling Sage
Lately, there seems to be an increasing level of polarization that exists in this country. I’m not like many who decry this while wringing their hands and asking, “Can’t we all just get along?” I have no problem with disagreements, strife, or even fistfights among our leaders. Some of the dustups we see from time to time in certain parliaments around the world can be quite entertaining. I would love to see that in Congress sometime. What I do decry, is what actually amounts to needless extremism, when it comes to our positions on issues. In my view, very often, the solution to a particular issue or problem is somewhere in the middle between two extremes. Very rarely is the view held by conservatives totally in the right. And even more rarely is the view held by liberals on any particular issue totally correct. But, most of the time, both sides seem to feel the need to stake out an extreme point of view on whatever the issue happens to be and are unwilling to concede any ground. On this page I simply endeavor to show that many times the real solutions to our problems are somewhere in the middle between the two extremes. Sometimes the issue has nothing to do with government. Sometimes it is simply groups with different views. But the standard still applies. The truth is in the middle. In the end, most of us are practical and reasonable people. We ought to be able to find common ground. I will also explore the reasons for the extremism that exists today. The primary reason seems to be that most people have a need to belong. They have a need to belong to something. Therefore, they latch on to the group that has beliefs as close to their own as they can find. This puts them in the position of having to defend all of the positions of that group, regardless of whether they really support those views or not. At the very least, they know there is no way they could support one particular side, so they go with the side that is overall closer to their viewpoint, even if they have to stomach some bad things in the process. But why do this at all? Why not stake out your own position? There isn’t a need to belong to any particular group. I’m not.  This section of the site will have more to do with changing perceptions and ways of thinking. Issues will be discussed. But the concept that the truth is in the middle is the real theme here. The truth is very rarely all that radical. The truth is instead very practical and reasonable and is sitting right out there in the open. Emotionalism Over Reason: Leaving Logic Behind Why All the Extremism? Alternative Media: A Double-Edged Sword The Swing of the Pendulum: Truth in the Middle Police Shootings and Race: It’s not Black and White For or Against Trump? Well…..Neither Neither Side is Getting a Lasting Majority: We are just too reasonable for that We Need a Centrist Party for the Reasonable Ones I Will Not Be Drawn Into the Nastiness
